Here is video footage of the Moorhead High School that was completed in 1967. This appeared on WDAY in the summer of 1966. The opening view is towards the southeast: you can see how sparsely populated it was on Rensvold Blvd and Maple Ln.

Also, note the three stripes on Lyle’s MHS letter sweater. Each stripe equates to the total number of years of being a letter winner. It appeared Lyle was Moorhead’s lone three-year letter winner. Lyle played football for NDSU and was inducted into their hall of fame in 1973.
Lyle Sturgeon, MHS class of ‘33, played two seasons with the Green Bay Packers. While a Packer he played for NFL Hall of Fame coach Curly Lambeau. As a Spud (see arrow) he played for MBCA Hall of Fame coach Glen Hanna. One writer referred to Lyle as Moorhead’s Mountain Man.

We are grateful for the work of WDAY reporter Kevin Wallevand and his videographer, Ryan Longnecker. Their genuine care for us in Moorhead and their willingness to always promote our school and projects is always appreciated. Today is the last day to order a Spud book link ⬇️⬇️

Here are photos of the Moorhead Junior High orchestra during the 1999-2000 school year. Their director was Jo Marie Fike. During the era the band and orchestra both shared the same rehearsal room just as they had done when this building opened as South Junior High in 1958.

We gave a Spud Update for the residents of the Linden at Eventide this afternoon. Did you know that each week several Eventide residents, including Marcella Gulsvig and Jean Jacobsen (l to r), make hundreds of sandwiches that are given to Spud students at MHS. #GratefulSpuds

This is Mavis Sunde Lysaker, MHS class of 1952. Today she picked up her copy of “Once a Spud… Always a Spud”. It is always great connecting with Spud graduates from all eras!

The Spud History display cabinets at the new Moorhead High School were filled this week. The display is located right next to the main entrance of the gym. A special Spud thank you to all those who have donated items to our collection.

Dozens of MHS choir reel-to-reel recordings were recently donated to our Spud archive collection. The earliest recordings are from the 1956-57 school year when Vern Opheim was the choir teacher. This particular recording is from the choir production of “H.M.S Pinafore”.
