Bill Quenette graduated from West Fargo (N.D.) High School in 1951 and attended Concordia College, Moorhead. During high school and college, he played football, basketball and baseball. After two years at Concordia, Quenette enlisted in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany, where he played basketball, baseball and football for the 4th Division Special Troops. In 1955 he returned to Concordia, graduating in 1957 with a degree in physical education.

Quenette became a faculty member and coach at Concordia College. He earned a master’s degree in physical education from Washington State University in Pullman, Wa., in 1960 before returning to Concordia. In 1962 he was recruited as the first basketball and baseball coach at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Wa.

In 1966 Quenette began teaching and coaching at Moorhead High School. He taught both physical education and history his first two years. He taught physical education from 1968 until he retired from teaching in 1994. From 1966 to 2005, Quenette coached football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, and boys and girls golf. He also was a basketball assistant coach at Concordia College from 1982-84 and a football assistant coach at Shanley High School in Fargo from 1993-95.

As boys basketball head coach for the Spuds from 1967-82, Quenette compiled a 232-96 record. He guided the basketball team to a state tournament runner-up finish in 1968. The basketball team played in the 1981 state tournament under Coach Q, as he was known. As baseball head coach from 1966-73, he led the baseball team to the state tournament in 1967 and 1968. As an assistant coach, Quenette played a role in other state tournament appearances for football, basketball and golf.

In 1993 the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association named Quenette the Assistant Basketball Coach of the Year. He was MSHSCA Assistant Golf Coach of the Year in both 1994 and 1996. Quenette was inducted into the Concordia College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990, the Minnesota High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Minnesota High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2012.

Bill married Darlene “Andy” Quenette in 1956. They have four adult children and three grandchildren. Bill Quenette died on Feb. 28, 2013, at age 79.
